Game Review

After a very inaccurate first quarter, the Blues struggled to close the margin and eventually lost by 20 points.

Fitzroy won the ruck duels, through the centre, and their team work around the ground was too good for the Blues. The 'Roys opened the game with five goals straight in the first quarter, and Carlton were lucky the visitors were off target in the second. The Blues' defence was always under pressure and Grieve was Carlton's best defender. On the forward line Warburton was the only winner, "with his freakish marks and speedy ground play inspired Carlton but always found it hard to pass Chanter and Stephen."

This was Jack Howell's first game after standing down for a season. "Howell did not relish Chanter's close and rugged attention, and seemed cramped for space." The marking of Davies, English, Milroy provided the Blues with some improvement after the long break, and put the visitors on the defensive.
