Game Review
Despite the Bombers jumping out of the blocks to be up at the main break, the Blues would dominate the second half to smash the Bombers in this important end-of-season game. 9 goals to 1 in the third quarter warms the heart even though it was over 25 years ago, but then to finish them off with another 8 goals looks a treat.The team list from the Record of the time can be viewed here.
Carlton's small man brigade was responsible for the Blues convincing win against Essendon at Princes Park. The top votes went to Carlton's Alex Marcou who was unstoppable and had 29 kicks in a fine display. Marcou was well supported by the ever-reliable Bruce Doull who set up a lot of attacking moves from the defensive half for the Blues throuhout the game. - Inside Football Player of the Year.
Carlton have really answered their critics who said they would collapse this year after the pre-season fracas at Princes Park. When George Harris and Alex Jesaulenko parted ways with the Blues, it was not exactly on the most pleasant terms. Jesaulenko was replaced by the old Carlton favorite Percy Jones - formerly great mates, but now on uneasy speaking terms. Everyone said it was the end for the Blues. How could a premiership team go through such a tremendous internal war - and let's face it, it was a war - and come up with the goods next season? Well, not only have Carlton made the final five, but the way they're playing they are a definite premiership threat again this year. Percy Jones was quick to establish that he would shed his image as the "clown prince" and that the only way the players would be able to forget the internal bickering and regain some pride in the club was hard work. And hard work it has been - behind the scenes as well as on the playng arena. The Carlton brains trust secured the services of Greg Wells and Val Perovic to add to their already impressive list of players. Perovic is a good, tough defender, while Greg Wells is a major bonus to the centre where his quick thinking and clever play have blended in beautifully with the Carlton formula. I think Carlton will be pests for years to come if they can sign a key forward - somebody to take the pressure off Mark Maclure, who needs room to move at centre half-forward. - Kevin Sheedy Inside Football
