Game Review
Ross Ditchburn kicked seven goals for Carlton as the Blues downed the courageous Fitzroy by 39 points. Des English and Phil Maylin did well for Carlton while Les Parish and Peter Francis were the Lions best players. - Football Record.
Carlton has roared back into premiership calculations with some big performances in recent matches. Part of the Blues master plan seems to be first year player called Ross Ditchburn. He has booted 48 goals in just nine senior games this season and has slotted into the Carlton forward line comfortably. He looks like he's been playing at full forward for the Blues for several seasons, such is his natural ability. I have only one minor reservation about Ditchburn in finals. He looks a little slow at times. But he leads up to the ball, combined with the superb delivery from his team-mates further afield, should enable Ditchburn to make a prominent impression, even under finals pressure. He has solved a crucial problem for the Blues, who lost veteran David McKay at the end of last year and missed Mark Maclure for some games this season through injury and suspension. The Blues have lacked another key forward in the Ditchburn mould. The other sides in the fight for the flag have a key forward, except Essendon. Normally that type of instability would concern me but, in the finals these moves can sometimes win games in which I believe the Blues will have no problems with, in achieving their end goal . - Doug Wade Inside Football.
It was again the Carlton mosquito fleet that paved the way for a comfortable 39 point victory over Fitzroy, this win secured a double chance for the Blues. Alex Marcou was outstanding on the vast open spaces at VFL Park on Saturday. Marcou's speed and endurance enabled him to pick up possessions at will. Ken Sheldon was also instrumental in the Blues victory. Sheldon's midfield play and general ball handling kept the Blues forwards busy by continually pumping the ball deep into the Blues forward line. - Inside Football Player of the Year.
