Game Review
"Carlton had its first win when it toppled Fitzroy, previously undefeated. The game was hard and solid with perhaps too much weight used at times, and Carlton's evenness was a winning feature. Fitzroy played wildly, never settled down, and kicked poorly.Anderson played remarkably well at centre half-back. Bailey was little behind him, followed by McInnes, Cooper, Wrout, Fitzgibbon, and Gneil." (Argus June 01)
"Failing badly in the attack, where there was too much individual play and too hurried attempts at goal getting, Fitzroy lost to Carlton by 23 points. Carlton exploited the loose man, and in the opening stages particularly, were faster to the ball. In the first term, Carlton scored five goals, while the Maroons could mange only six points from six tries. Wrout gave a brilliant display of well-judged high marking, and was a winning influence in the third term, when he scored three goals. At one stage the going was willing, and spite in evidence. Collins is getting right back to form, and made most of his chances to kick four goals." (Age June 01 p4)
At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 90.9.
