Game Review
For the general public, the story of this day may have been Carlton's comfortable home-ground win over a plucky South Melbourne. But for the Blues faithful of that generation it is celebrated for the modest debut of the great 'Flying Doormat'; Bruce Doull - who would eventually play in six Grand Finals during his celebrated career, and win four of them. Bruce started on the bench, and replaced Alex Jesaulenko at half time. He kicked his first career goal in the third quarter. John Goold also came off at the long break, and was replaced by Barry Gill. Carlton stamped their authority on the game after half-time with a trademark onslaught of six goals to two, to set up a 26-point advantage at three-quarter time, and cruised home from there.
After the previous week's lucky escape - when all charges from a torrid scrap against Collingwood were later thrown out - Ricky McLean was reported yet again, this time by field umpire Ian Coates on a charge of misconduct in that he used abusive language to Coates in the last quarter.
Carlton full-forward Ricky McLean was reported for the second time in eight days and was outed by the tribunal for two matches for having used abusive language to field umpire Ian Coates in the match against Sth Melbourne. The VFL Umpires Appointment Board also asked the VFL to investigate remarks by Ron Barassi about an umpire and he later was reprimanded by letter. - Football Life.
