Carlton rover Rod Ashman moved into equal second place in our progressive tally after dominating play in the match against St Kilda at Moorabbin. The classy rover gathered 21 kicks, shot out seven handballs and took eight marks to earn top votes. Another rover, Alex Marcou, also finished with an impressive tally of 27 kicks to be in the votes.'' - Inside Football Player of the Year.
''Little wonder Carlton has fought so hard in the past couple of years to keep star rover Rod Ashman at Princes Park. Back in 1979 Ashman threatened legal action against Carlton in a bid to win a release from the club. But the Blues stood firm - there was no way they were going to let one of the League's finest rovers go. Eventually Ashman realised if he was to continue his VFL career it would have to be with Carlton. He would return to the club mid-way through the 1979 season and has since shown why Carlton fought so determinedly to keep him.
Early this year there were stories floating around that Ashman would join Melbourne as the final part of the deal for former Demon cenreman Greg Wells. But new coach David Parkin wouldn't hear of Ashman leaving the club again. Two other Carlton players joined Melbourne - Ashman stayed and has started the season in superb fashion. The Blues have a classy array of small men, but Ashman is undoubtly the leader if the "mosquito fleet". Old Boys thrive on former clubs - ....... Down at Moorabbin, Carlton CHB Val Perovic turned it on against his old club St Kilda. Perovic continually thwarted St Kilda attacking moves with cool, calculated defensive play. He played a major part in restricting the Saints to a losing score.- Tony Greenberg Inside Football.
Carlton is a much improved side this year. I say that despite the fact I haven't seen the Blues play yet this season. But from all reports they're showing a lot more desire - due mainly to the coaching efforts of David Parkin. Parkin has his players attacking the ball with great ferocity just like his old side Hawthorn. It was a top effort by Carlton to beat St Kilda at Moorabbin on Saturday.
The Saints went into the game chock full of confidence after impressive performances in the first four rounds. At quarter time, with St Kilda 20 points in front and being urged on by its legion of supporters at home, the situation looked grim for Carlton. But the Blues fought back in brillant fashion and ended up crushing St Kilda by 64 points.
Carlton has an abundance of top class small men, two ruckmen playing extremely well at present in Fitzpatrick and Jones, a great defence led by Southby, Doull and Perovic, and it has picked up two excellent interstate recruits - Bosustow and Hunter. Carlton showed premiership style as it kicked 17 goals in two quarters against St Kilda. After a goal-less first quarter the Blues went on the rampage with Mike Fitzpatrick kicking four goals in nine minutes against the wind shortly after half time. - Football Record.
