The Blues avenged their loss to Collingwood in Round 1 with this 8 point victory. At the time, the Pies were sitting on top of the ladder, but after our victory, fell to second behind South Melbourne. Carlton were sitting in third with 5 wins from 8 games.
The game is perhaps best known for an umpiring controversy of the time. Gus Dobrigh of Collingwood was suspended for 4 games for striking Carlton’s Percy Daykin, but in addition, 2 Carlton players in Harry Haughton and Rod McGregor were suspended for 15 games and 5 games respectively for giving unsatisfactory evidence. Boundary Umpire Fox (supported by three Collingwood players) went to the tribunal after the Collingwood player had been suspended, and said he had told Haughton that he was going to report him, but didn’t report him after the game. The Carlton players denied knowledge of the report, but the tribunal accepted the Collingwood players and umpire version.
Collingwood's Bill Walton was also suspended (2 matches for striking Paddy O'Brien).
At the end of this round Carlton were in 3rd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 129.7.
