Game Review

The match promised much with two of the game's greatest ruckmen opposed to each other. However, both John Nicholls and Graham "Polly'' Farmer were relatively quiet with Farmer just overshadowing Big John. The best big man on the field was Serge Silvagni who as usual was never brilliant but always effective.
"Carlton started the match with several positional changes. Hall was on the half forward flank. Jesaulenko at centre half-forward and Kekovich to a forward pocket. In the second quarter Jesaulenko went to full-forward. Barassi to centre half-forward and Kekovich to a forward pocket.
And the merry-go-round of the Carlton attack did not stop in the third term. In this quarter Kekovich was at centre half-forward. Jesaulenko on the forward flank and Hall at full forward." (Age June 05)
The Blues should have had the game sewn up at half time but poor kicking kept the Cats in the game. The home team got out to a match winning lead of 23 points at the 18 minute mark of the last term, but Geelong who never gave up, slammed on three quick goals and the game was anyone's. With minutes left the Cats made another attack, but the Blues' defence held them out for Carlton to run out winners by 4 points.
