Blues go down to dominating Roos
Carlton suffer 69-point loss to North Melbourne at IKON Park. - By Jazz Bennett, Carlton Media.It was a disappointing night at IKON Park, with Carlton falling to North Melbourne by 69 points. North Melbourne dominated from the opening bounce, with the Blues struggling to get the Sherrin into their forward 50. Mimi Hill and Abbie McKay led from the front, with the pair being elevated to co-captains in the absence of Kerryn Peterson who was out from a shoulder injury, but their efforts were hampered by North Melbourne defenders. The Blues’ defence was under constant pressure as the ball lived in North’s forward line, with the away team slotting five goals in the first term. Gab Pound did her best to move it out, but the 2023 grand finalists were well prepared and swung momentum. While there was improvement with the Blues’ ball movement as the game progressed, Carlton wasn’t able to reflect it on the scoreboard. Celine Moody was able to finally get the Blues on the board in the third, kicking her first major in the Navy Blue. Lila Keck also had her moments, making quick decisions to move the ball quickly into the Blues forward line. Unfortunately, McKay left the field with a lower leg injury in the third term, leaving the midfield under the pump. Jess Dal Pos was able to show her leadership, gritting her teeth to get the ball moving forward despite the large scoreline, however, the Carlton forwards were overpowered in the air and on the ground. The Blues won’t have time to dwell on the disappointing result, now having to prepare to travel to Adelaide to face Port Adelaide on Sunday afternoon.

Rampant Roos crush Carlton after stunning first half
Seven goals to zero in the first half guides North Melbourne to a huge win over Carlton. - By Phoebe McWilliams.North Melbourne's forwards have had a night out at Ikon Park, with the Kangaroos thumping a lacklustre Carlton by 69 points. The Kangaroos had eight individual goal kickers in what was a one-sided affair, with last year's Grand Finalist winning 12.7 (79) to 1.4 (10) in front of a crowd of 2,027. It was a hot start by North, who dominated clearances and inside 50s as Ash Riddell (36 disposals, seven tackles) and Jasmine Garner (22 disposals, 12 contested possessions) racked up disposals and put Carlton's relatively young and inexperienced defenders under pressure. North's deep entries suited tall forwards Tahlia Randall and Emma King, who brought the ball to ground for their smalls to go to work. Bella Eddey kicked the game's first goal, followed shortly by teammate Tess Craven. Carlton's defenders struggled under the repeat 50 entries, giving away free kicks to Niamh Martin and Vikki Wall within range, allowing them to make it five unanswered goals for the quarter.
The Blues' pressure around the ball lifted in the second term, but defensive breakdowns saw North's forwards on their own inside 50, with Randall kicking the next two in a row from an open goal square. Carlton made forays forward, but the Kangaroos' defensive structure lead by captain Emma Kearney (23 disposals, five rebound 50s) and recruit Libby Birch (eight rebound 50s) were adamant in not letting the home side score. Things got worse for the Blues after the half-time break, with Randall adding a third to her tally before Garner got a goal of her own. The Blues finally got on the board when Celine Moody kicked her first in her new colours, but their joy was short-lived when Eddey kicked her second for the night moments later. Goals to Emma King and Lulu Pullar in the final term put the game well and truly to bed as the Roos moved to the top of the ladder, although they have played one more game than the unbeaten Adelaide in second.
Star Blue injured
A tough night was made worse for the Blues tonight when star midfielder and vice-captain Abbie McKay left the field with a foot injury in the third term and didn't return. The Blues will be hoping it's nothing serious, with a short turnaround to their match on Sunday against Port Adelaide. Carlton are already missing captain Keryn Peterson with a shoulder sprain so could potentially be without two of their three leaders in what is an important game against the Power.
Who do you tag?
After not tagging Richmond's Mon Conti last week, Carlton decided this week to put time into Kangaroos' vice-captain Jasmine Garner. Lily Goss limited Garner to 22 disposals and two clearances, but that allowed Ash Riddell to run free. Riddell finished the night with 35 disposals, 442 metres gained, four clearances and seven tackles. The Roos play Richmond this weekend and it will be interesting to see which one (if any) of North's mids the Tigers tag on Sunday.

Both Carlton and North Melbourne play two matches in week five and will have a four-day break before their next matches. The Blues head to Alberton Oval to play Port Adelaide and the Kangaroos will host Richmond at UTAS Stadium in Launceston.
