Game Review
Carlton produces second consecutive convincing win.
Carlton put together a comprehensive performance against North Melbourne. - By Cristian Filippo, Carlton Media.Carlton has produced a second consecutive convincing win, storming home against North Melbourne in an 82-point triumph. The Blues burst out of the blocks and were then able to weather a challenge from the Roos, producing 14 second-half goals in the 24.9 (153) to 11.5 (71) win. It was the Blues’ midfield brigade who led the charge, with arguably nobody more impressive than George Hewett, who was awarded the inaugural SuperClash Superhero Medal after another brilliant performance (34 disposals, 12 clearances, nine tackles). It was a hot start early in front of a capacity Marvel Stadium crowd, with the ball bouncing up and back under the roof as the two sides shared the first four goals of the game. With a good recent record against North Melbourne, Charlie Curnow loomed large early, registering the Blues’ first three scores (1.2) before laying the tackle which ended in 50-gamer Corey Durdin’s opening major. On the back of a career-best haul last week, Durdin started the game on fire, producing a hanger and second goal to springboard an electric final 10 minutes of the first term. Producing five unanswered goals, the Blues’ clearance dominance was clear for all to see, producing five goals from stoppages and six more centre clearances for the term. Adam Cerra and George Hewett led the way with 11 disposals each in the middle, while Lewis Young was a superb foil in attack, producing eight disposals, kicking a goal and restricting Charlie Comben’s impact in the air. North responded in the second term, with their midfielders gaining the early ascendancy and registering the first five inside 50s as Nick Larkey goaled from a free kick. At the other end, Charlie Curnow continued to give North Melbourne defenders headaches, kicking his second to produce the answer.
After missing last week through illness, Blake Acres got motoring in the second term, registering nine disposals as well as hitting the scoreboard after a forward intercept. But in the shadows of half time, the Blues couldn’t sustain their early pressure, as North kicked the final two goals to bring the margin back to 20. The Carlton midfield burst out of the blocks in the third term, as Cerra (seven disposals in third term) surged forward to kick his first after unselfish play from Curnow. It kick-started a run of six straight goals for the Blues, with boyhood Bluebagger Will White registering his first in front of a Melbourne crowd following a rundown tackle. Zac Williams produced two in a minute as the Blues were highly efficient going forward, finding a number of scoring sources forward of the ball while registering six goals from 12 inside 50s - those opportunities largely came about on the back of some electric forward pressure. A late George Wardlaw goal ended the run, but the Blues had broken the game open to lead by 50 points at the final change. North began full of run in the final term with two goals inside a minute but the Blues settled almost instantly, as a forward-50 tackle from Durdin earned Curnow another major. The Blues were at their brutal best in attack after a wasteful early few weeks, with Jesse Motlop and White (three goals apiece) getting the reward in front of goal, as did Cooper Lord who was subbed into the game for Elijah Hollands (tactical). Come the final siren, the Blues had produced a second straight big win and their highest score under Michael Voss heading into a nine-day break before the Round 7 clash with Geelong.
Blues blitz Roos in stunning Good Friday thrashing.
The Blues have belted the Kangaroos on Good Friday. - By Phoebe McWilliams at Marvel StadiumA ruthless Carlton outfit has thrashed North Melbourne by 82 points in the Good Friday SuperClash in front of a sell-out crowd of 46,373 at Marvel Stadium. Red-hot midfielder George Hewett was awarded the inaugural SuperClash Superhero Medal for his best-on-ground performance against the tired-looking Kangaroos. The Blues were the better side all day, particularly in the second half when they kicked 15 goals to North's five. Carlton made up for its inaccuracy last week against West Coast when they kicked 19 behinds, by scoring 24.9 (153) to the Kangaroos' 11.5 (71) to record their biggest score for the year. The Blues had 12 individual goalkickers, led by their spearhead Charlie Curnow and rejuvenated small forward Zac Williams who both finished with four majors. New Blue Will White kicked three goals in just his third game, as did small forward Jesse Motlop who kicked all three in the final term. For the Kangaroos it's the fifth time this season they have conceded over 100 points. In a worrying sign for Alastair Clarkson's men, Carlton piled on nine goals in the last quarter. In a day that had very few positives for Kangaroos fans, they would have been delighted to see their former No.4 draft pick George Wardlaw (21 disposals, five clearances) make his return to the top level. Wardlaw was a shining light for the home side, providing grunt and class to their midfield.
The game began with both sides scoring through their small forwards. For North it was Paul Curtis, who kicked his side's first two goals, while at the other end Corey Durdin scored two of his own in his 50th game. But the more experienced Carlton midfield kicked into gear in the second half of the quarter led by Hewett (34 disposals, 12 clearances) and Adam Cerra (28 disposals). Blues captain Patrick Cripps, who spent time forward providing another target inside 50 in Harry McKay's absence, kicked an outstanding goal with a left-foot snap from 40 metres out. Teammates Williams, Lewis Young and Tom De Koning all joined Cripps with their own majors to give the Blues a 31-point lead at quarter-time. North's second quarter was its best, where it outscored the Blues four goals to two. The two sides went goal for goal to begin the quarter with a number of scores coming from free kicks, but Cam Zurhaar and Luke Parker converted just before half-time to reduce the margin to 20 points. Former Blue Zac Fisher left the ground just before half-time with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Zane Duursma. Carlton came out after half-time and lifted to another level, while North started to look fatigued. The Blues' pressure lifted, and their midfielders started to hit the scoreboard with Cerra and Hewett adding to their rising tally. North began to make skill errors, while at the other end the Blues hit the scoreboard with small forward Williams kicking two in less than a minute. Wardlaw kept battling for North, kicking his side's only goal for the term. The Kangaroos came out in the final term and kicked the opening two goals, but after that it was all party time for the Blues as Motlop, White and substitute Cooper Lord turned their decent games into days out. It was a punishing final quarter, which would have been difficult to watch for the North crowd as the Blues continued to extend their lead, finishing the day winners by 82 points.
The Blues scored 10.3 to 0.3 from 20-5 forward 50 chains today, including 6.1 to 0.2 from forward 50 intercepts with a pressure rating of 206 to 157 in this zone. They also scored 12.5 to 6.2 from stoppages, recording 46-38 clearances and 20-10 centre bounce clearances. George Hewett recorded a game-high 34 disposals, 21 contested possessions, 12 clearances, eight score involvements and three score assists.
