Game Review
Both sides were weakened by injury for this game, with the respective captains; Ron Barassi and Ted Whitten missing. John Nicholls stepped up to lead the Blues and dominated the ruck contests. Bryan Quirk filled in at full-forward and kicked three goals, as the Blues' defence got right on top after half-time and stifled the Bulldog forwards. In other games in this round, St Kilda leapt to the top of the table with a huge win over Hawthorn at Mordialloc, and Geelong snatched second by beating Richmond at Kardinia Park. Melbourne lost to Essendon and dropped to third, while Carlton hung on to fourth spot ahead of the Bombers and Collingwood.
