St Kilda managed more shots at goal, but kicked 0.4 to Carlton’s 2.2 in the last quarter and handed Jack Worrall his historic first win as coach.
Carlton’s 14 successive losses prior to this game – stretching from round 6, 1901 to round 2, 1902, is an unwelcome record that still stands.
"What, to most critics, made the display seem a poor one was the apparent desire of each individual performer to win the match by himself. Both teams are capable of doing immeasurably better than they did on this occasion. Only in the Carlton ruck was there a semblance of system, and even that semblance disappeared during the time the veteran, Jo. McShane, was off the ball. It was the ex-Geelongite who won the match for Carlton, and his most deserving comrades were Snell, H. McShane, Rigby, McNamara, Watson, Walton, Chrisfield, and Todd."
