Game Review
This defeat would be Carlton's 14th - and last - in a row, completing our worst-ever losing sequence of games in the VFL.*John McFarlane created history in this, his only League game, when he became the only player at Carlton to play his whole senior career when Carlton didn’t score a goal. Imagine that in today's day and age - being part of an entire game and never seeing your team score a major...*
"Their system was palpably too much for Carlton, who, whilst offering their strongest resistance, proved tolerably easy victims. It was only during the latter portion of the third quarter that Carlton played more than a minor part; and even then they made very trifling headway, their best efforts being spent in the gaining of behinds. In the final bout South again asserted themselves, and appropriated all the points. In physique, as well as in play, Carlton were the inferior company, and though the proceedings were deviod of every semblance of spite, weight was a telling factor in the combat. One item in the first quarter redounded to the credit of the dark blues, namely, their wingman Rowland's great run that covered nearly the length of the ground, and wound up with a behind. On the ball, without a change the whole game through, Joe McShane was easily first in the Carlton company, marking and kicking as well as in his best Geelong days, and giving "the retort courteous" to critics who had mentioned him as a back number."
(Australasian, May 17, p21)
After this round Carlton were 8th on the ladder, with a percentage of 34.5.
.* Carlton had previously lost 15 VFA games in a row, the last 14 of 1893 and the first game of 1894.
.*The Blues had failed to score a goal on four occasions in the last ten seasons; 1893, 1894 twice, and 1895.
Of course, in the early days during the 1860's, failure to score a goal was commonplace.
