Game Review
This game is perhaps most memorable for the suspension of Blue George Topping for a whopping 35 games for striking South’s Bert Streckfuss. While serving his suspension, George acted as a field umpire in three VFL games, as well as some others in the VFA. Dick Casey of South Melbourne was also found guilty of striking Jim Marchbank and suspended for 16 games. At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 173.0.
Disgraceful Ruffianism
This football season has been the roughest yet, and violent incidents on and off the field are causing concern to football administration and even the Government. Perhaps the worst display occurred at the South Melbourne and Carlton match, when the game degenerated into a series of scrimmages, notwithstanding Carlton's win by 17 points. The worst incident occurred towards the end of the game when George Topping of Carlton felled Albet Streckfuss. People from the crowd surged over the fence and milled around and jostled around the felled player, while Andy McDonald picked up the ball and kicked Carlton's sixth goal. Topping has been disqualified for two seasons over the incident. - 100 Years of Australian Rules Football.
