Club history from 1966 records that the Seniors fielded some of the youngest teams to ever play for Carlton. This percolated down through the Reserves, where most of the players were probably eligible to play in the Under 19s. The Senior Committee, led by President George Harris, had formed a policy of only recruiting players who had the potential to win Premierships for Carlton.

Carlton would come 8th in the 1966 Under 19's competition, a fair way behind Essendon who would bring up their 5th Premiership at this level.

New key players for the Blues would include Robert Walls and Bruce Doull. Walls debuted in the first match - Round 1 v Richmond while Royce Hart was lining up for Richmond. Just 2 weeks later Walls would be promoted to the Reserves team, alongside Peter Dyring when Walls was 15 years and 290 days old when he commenced 'open age football', while Bruce Doull broke his wrist on debut with the thirds in round 3 against Fitzroy at Princes Park, and missed the rest of the season.

The Under 19s coach was Bill Hoogen. Apparently, he addressed the team from over the fence at the start of the season, as the paperwork for his transfer from Coburg had not been processed in time.
