Prentice played a single game for Carlton, running out in Navy Blue in 1903. His playing record is identical to fellow single-gamer Billy Orr, who also ran out that year. He was recruited from Port Melbourne Rovers.

"Lithgow from Yarra Glen, and Prentice from the Ports Rovers - were included in the Carlton team. The former played a clever, useful game forward, and the latter showed fairly good form in the centre." (Age August 24 p8}
Monday's Argus in its match report said, "... while Prentice, of the Port Rovers - a metropolitan association team, gave promise of future excellence on the centre-line."

Prentice passed away on the 20th June, 1914 aged 34.

Note:

There was an Alexander Prentice of 60 Walsh Street West Melbourne who died at the Eye and Ear Hospital on June 10 aged 34.
This gentleman had been a newspaper seller at Spencer Street station for 22 years. He left a widow, Jane and three sons, Alexander 12, John 11, and Archibald 8.

The West Australian, June 30 (p1) said he died on 20 June (same family details as above) and worked with newsagent J. Prentice at Spencer Street Station.
