Born in Collingwood, William Frederick ‘Billy’ Wood was a versatile small man who was recruited by the Blues in 1928 after an impressive couple of seasons with VFA front-runners Northcote. He stayed only one season at Princes Park, but finished his short career off with a memorable performance.

Beginning in round 1, 1928, Wood played the first four of his seven senior matches as a winger, and the other three as a roving partner to the feisty Tommy Downs. He was handy without really consolidating his place in a strong Blues line-up, and wasn’t selected again after Carlton was soundly beaten by Richmond in round 13.

Billy spent the remainder of the year with Carlton seconds, and on Melbourne Show Day (Thursday, 27 September) took part in the VFL Reserves Grand Final between Carlton and Geelong at the MCG. A good crowd of over 8000 fans turned up, and saw Carlton win their third flag in a row under captain-coach Jimmy Goonan. Wood was outstanding on his wing that afternoon, as one of the prime movers in Carlton’s emphatic 5-goal victory.

In 1929, Billy went back to Northcote, and gave the Brickfielders loyal service for a number of years.

Wood passed away on the 14th November, 1975 aged 70.
