Game Review
Carlton drew the opening match of the 1917 season against Fitzroy."The final term began with great speed and dash, but there were no returns for a long time. Fitzroy fought strenuously to make up the leeway, but after half the term had passed Carlton increased the lead to 6 points. Then a special effort by the 'Roys won a chance, which Heaney turned to full account, and scores exactly balanced. Following up the rush, Fitzroy secured a one-point lead, but the Carltonians persevered, and collected an equalising point. As time drew close Fitzroy made a concluding dash, and might have gained a winning point, but the eventful kick went astray. In the midst of tremendous excitement, the time bell rang in a dead tie at 6-9 each.
Carlton's specialists were Martin,Canet, Lead (Lear), McGregor, Valentine, and Brown."
(Weekly Times May 19 p20)
Incredibly, this was the fourth time in 7 years the Blues had opened the season with a draw.
Witnessing this feat today were 4 debutants, including Lyle Downs who would score a goal on debut.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 4th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 100.0.
