Game Review
A heavy ground in a poor condition greeted the Carlton players at Glenferrie.Carlton's fifth loss of the year came at the hands of Hawthorn at Glenferrie Oval. The Hawks' tough and effective full-forward John Peck was the difference between the two sides, kicking five goals from limited opportunities.
If not for brilliant defender John James and Serge Silvagni in the ruck, the defeat would have been much greater.
John Nicholls reinjured his thigh in the first term. The home team then started to take control of the game.
John Heathcote was one of the best players on the ground until a first quarter heavy knock and facial injury reduced his effectiveness. He did not take his place in the team after half time.
Carlton's spearhead, Tom Carroll, was well-held by Hawthorn's Sted Hay. He kicked only one major to take his total for the season so far to 24.
The Blues slipped down the ladder to ninth, but remarkably, stayed well in contention for a finals berth - trailing fourth-placed Geelong by only 2 points.
