Game Review
After beginning the season in the doldrums, Carlton went into this match against fifth-placed Melbourne knowing that suddenly, a fourth win on the trot would have the Blues pounding on the door to the top four.Coach Worrall strengthened his side with the experience of Henry McShane and Bobby Walsh, and both were prominent as the Blues and the Fuchsias went toe to toe in a spirited contest. Scores were level at half-time, before Carlton nosed in front by 3 points at the last change. Then, in a grinding last quarter, Melbourne kicked 1.2 to Carlton’s 0.2 and snatched victory by three points.
Now, the Blues were once again sixth with a percentage of 72.4, two wins outside the top four, and with their faint finals hopes all but dashed.

"Carlton and Melbourne had a great even go, victory ultimately resting with the latter. There was a lot hanging to the result, for the winners have a possible chance for the coveted fourth position in the finals. The game was contested in the best spirit imaginable. The excitement was at fever heat all through, for the result was in doubt until the final ringing of the bell. There was some magnificent running, kicking, and marking, but also a bit of fumbling. Melbourne's hand-balling was capital, and at times their passing was quickly and effectively executed. There was absolutely nothing in the match, either one way or the other, so far as superiority was concerned, but it speaks volumes for the discipline and sportsmanlike qualities of the players of both sides that they fought the game out in such a manly matter, considering the eccentricities of Keenan, the field umpire. In all my experience I have never seen a less satisfactory exhibition. Certainly Carlton have nothing to thank him for. He let the most glaring breaches of the rules pass unnoticed, and repeatedly penalised men who were fair. If this umpire's performance on Saturday is a sample of his best, then he is incompetent."
