"Confident that such high-grade combinations as Essendon and Carlton would make a superb match, a mass of people swarmed into Prince's Oval. £280 was taken at the gates, yet this sum gives scant indication of the great assemblage. Each club has a membership roll of many thousads.The crowd was packed - electric, simmering with expectation. But the play proved unworthy the occasion. It was a heavy game generally, with little of the glitter expected.
From start to finish Carlton were on top. They handled the ball more cleanly, marked more surely, and their fast, accurate stab-kicks were in marked contrast to those of their opponents. Particularly strong was their centre line, turning with ease countless Essendon rushes.
Essendon's play bristled with error - their exchanges were irresolute and ragged. From the outset they played as a beated side, their supporters waiting in vain for that famous Red and Black finish.
Essendon's defeat was as inexplicable as it was decisive. They became a rabble in the hands of a well-drilled force.

Carlton's champion was Challis, half-forward. Fastest man on the ground, he finished his runs with a pass as clean as an arrow, and in the close work his movements were marvellously rapid and certain. That pocket Hercules, Valentine, was again in great form, roving: and McGregor was supreme in the centre. Despite several errors, Green and Gardiner were brisk, clever forwards, Bowen and Gillespie were as a strong wall on the back lines, and Wilson's ruck play was very fine."
