Game Review

The Blues were a severely weakened outfit as Jezza, Percy, Tiger, Arma and Southby (sorry no nickname) were missing. Carlton clung to the coat-tails of the high-flying Kangaroos until half-time, after which they were no match. A miserable return of 1-9 in the second half didn't help, but considring the Northerners put on 8-11 hardly constitutes an excuse. Our spot in the finals was back in the melting-pot. North hadn't played finals since 1958 but this victory almost guaranteed their participation in 1974.

A couple of highlights...
- A third-quarter 'all-in' sparked by North's full-forward Doug Wade, who crashed through Johnny O'Connell from behind and was mobbed by a bunch of irate Blues.
- Robert Walls, who would become the only Blue to hit 150 games before hitting the ripe old age of 24.
- Trevor Keogh won 'Play of the Day' on World of Sport for a mesmerising run around a multitude of North players. ('Play of the Day' was awarded to a beautiful piece of football that did not include a goal or a mark. What other sport on the world can offer 3 spectacular awards like Australian Rules?)

The Kangaroos continued their winning run by defeating Carlton for the second time this season and it was only the second time they have achieved this ever (the last time was in 1958). The win gave North three in a row against Carlton - the first time they've ever achieved this. - Football Record.
