Game Review

Last-placed Melbourne caused a huge upset when they beat the ladder-leading Blues by 7 points in this tough, entertaining contest at the MCG. With nothing to lose, and brilliantly led by their star centreman Greg Wells (who would later play in a Premiership team for the Blues) Melbourne attacked the ball and the ball-carrier with tenacity from the first bounce, and drew level with the Blues just before the three-quarter time siren. Carlton's cause wasn't helped when Alex Jesaulenko twisted an ankle and was replaced at half time by Doug Baird. At three-quarter time, Peter Kerr replaced Bert Thornley who had a bruised eye socket. Then, in a desperate last term, Melbourne kicked 5.4 to Carlton's 4.3 and won by 7 points.
