Game Review
Essendon kicked with a blustery breeze in the first quarter of this game at East Melbourne, and should have put the result beyond doubt at the first break. They bombarded the goals, but managed only one goal from ten scoring shots.When Carlton’s turn came to use the wind, the visitors couldn’t find a way through the tight Essendon defence often enough, and trailed by 21 points at half-time. The wind began to ease after that, yet Essendon kept the Blues to one solitary point in the third term, while they added 2.4 to lead by 6 goals.
A furious Jack Worrall then demanded a big last quarter from his men, and got it. At last finding the determination and cohesion and that had been sadly lacking, the Blues piled on 4.4 to 2.0 in the last 30 minutes to reduce the final margin to 20 points.
Essendon maintained second spot on the ladder after this victory, while Carlton still sat second-last – equal on points with South Melbourne, and ahead of only the winless St Kilda.
