Game Review
Carlton's player/secretary George Bruce organised for the team to travel to Geelong onboard the S.S Tyrian which the club had chartered. A vaudeville troupe will entertain the players and barrackers, and some of the players will take part in the amusements. Tickets available at the Melbourne Sports Depot. The steamer will leave Queen's Wharf at 9.30am. A special football train has also been arranged for those supporters who prefer Terra Firma and it will leave Spencer street station at noon.A very large holiday crowd attended the Corio Oval. The Blues' skipper Jack Wells won the toss and kicked with the wind to the Bay end goal. Carlton hit the ground full of running and dominated the home side in this term, especially in the centre and on the wings. Three goals were kicked by Valentine, Bruce and Baud. Clancy, Bruce, Challis, Valentine, and Gardiner were standouts in the first quarter. The Blues led by 17 points at the first break.
Geelong hit back, and some of the Pivot's zig-zagging play was mesmerizing and they added 3.4 for the quarter. Valentine's dribbler was the only goal the Blues scored, and they held onto a narrow 2 point margin at half time. In the third term Alf Baud came to the fore with his high marking and speed. Baud kicked a long goal which just squeezed through. Tom Clancy and Gordon Green picked up the pace, and with Valentine a stand out in the centre getting the ball to Baud who marked a long way out from goal, and again his long kick went straight. Geelong attacked, but Ernie Jamieson with the best play of the day, running out from full back roosted the ball right down into the forward line. The crowd cheering his efforts. From Jamieson's dashing move, George Bruce snapped the Blues' seventh goal. The home team hit back with two late goals to be 13 points down at three quarter time.
Geelong constantly attacked for the first 12 minutes and the Blues only had the ball over the centre once. Barmingham, Jamieson, Bacquie and Baud withstood the onslaughts and played like champions in defence. Geelong failed to score in this period. However, they missed a sitter hitting the post from only 15 yards out. Then the Pivots kicked two quick goals and Carlton's lead had dwindled to one point. The excitement was intense and umpire Elder let the game go as he had done all day. The Blues' experience told out and they were able to stymie all of Geelong's moves. Vin Gardiner gave the Blues much needed breathing space when he kicked a goal with a snap from the ruck. The Blues then pressed the attack home and they were prepared to take the risks, and, with one minute to go Richard Moran from a crush of players put the sealer through the sticks.
Carlton were without the services of Marchbank, Dick, O'Brien, plus O'Donnell, and fully deserved their 15 point victory.
The Blues defeated the mid-tabled Cats to sure-up 3rd place. After Round 8, we were sitting pretty with 6 1/2 wins from 8 matches, but were about to start our decline down the ladder, in which we would only win 3 more matches from 10 starts to finish a long way from 3rd.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 3rd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 120.5.
