Game Review
Ladder-leaders Fitzroy kicked six goals to Carlton's one in the last quarter of this match, and won by 38 points at Princes Park. Meanwhile, over at Victoria Park, Collingwood beat Geelong and climbed to sixth spot on the ladder - ahead of Carlton and St Kilda. Carlton's finals prospects were now looking very grim indeed.
"There was a great crowd at Prince's Oval to witness the return match between Fitzroy and Carlton. The latter have been showing form every match, and have extended every team they have met. The score on Saturday (Fitzroy, 7-11 to 2-3) do not convey an accurate estimate of the game. The excellence of the work by Carlton was a revelation to all but their own supporters. To within 15 minutes of the finish they played almost as fine a game as the premiers, meeting charge with counter charge, just as finely as their great opponents.
They are a dashing young team, and with a little better organisation would be absolutely first-class. In no match this year (with the exception of their one defeat by Collingwood at the start of the year.) were the champions so hard pressed; and, as I mentioned before, only in the last 15 minutes were Carlton shaken off.
In that last quarter of an hour, however, Fitzroy kicked 5 goals, prior to which they were only two points ahead, kicking their third goal from a free kick."
"Carlton's best representative was Rowland, who hails from Rutherglen, and was the most brilliant man on the ground. He showed a clean pair of heels to Robinson, besides handling like an artist, Rigby on the wing, Morrison, Walsh, and Considine, following; Powell, centre, Thompson, Stuckey back; O'Dwyer and Walton half-back; and McShane half-forward, were all good. Sullivan kicked a beautiful goal.
Crapp umpired superbly. The game was very willing, and in less capable hands might have been far from pleasant. He is much the best umpire."
(Jack Worrall The Referee July 04)
At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 67.2.
