Born in Gisborne in 1869, Edward Page Heffernan joined Carlton’s VFA team from Fitzroy Juniors, and was one of 15 Blues who made up the majority of the side selected for Carlton’s VFL debut against the Maroons at the Brunswick Street Oval on May 8, 1897. A week later, he played his second and last game for Carlton on the eve of his 28th birthday.
He died on his 35th birthday (the death records listed his death at Prn H (Princes Hill?) and was listed as Richard Page Heffernan).
Heffernan was allocated to one forward pocket against Fitzroy, and like his team was well-beaten by a bigger, better Maroons outfit. He held his place in the side for round two against South Melbourne, but although Carlton improved markedly and could have been unlucky to lose by 4 points, by then Ted had realised that his future was limited at Princes Park, and that he would be better off somewhere else.
Heffernan, late of Carlton, was playing for St. Johns against St. Judes in the railway paddock Royal Park..(Herald Sept.01 p2 1905)
