Hedge was a 200cm ruckman selected as a Rookie by the Blues in 2003 after impressing in the reserves in 2002. Hedge was good at the hit-outs but failed to make the most of his height around the ground. Hedge was not promoted to the Senior List and did not play a senior game for Carlton.

Hedge headed to South Australia for the 2004 season to play with SANFL club South Adelaide, he left at the end of the 2005 season. He would go back to his original junior club of Upwey Tecoma for the 2007 season.

He was originally recruited from Mitcham via Box Hill Hawks and Upwey-Tecoma.

2003 Inside Football Profile
The Blues saw enough in 200cm ruckman while he was playing for their VFL side to convince them he was worth selecting in the rookie draft. Has a good spring.

2012 - Who is the best and fairest of them all? We're not sure, but Megan Hustwaite asks the coaches to vote on the three most valuable players in Yarra Valley Mountain District League. A veteran ruckman who was talked out of retiring this season is the most influential player in the league according to YVMDFL coaches. Upwey Tecoma big man Tom Hedge topped the votes for his ruck work and ability to push forward and be a daunting target. "It's a great honour. At 32 I don't think I'm the best out there," Hedge said. "I'm 200cm, can play forward and in the ruck. I think I'm just hard to match up on because of my height." Belgrave spearhead Mitch Collins, who kicked 135 goals last season, came in second while ever green ball winner and Gembrook Cockatoo coach Ricky Clark came in third.
