Blues show fight against Crows
The Blues have shown promising signs in their practice match against the Crows. - By Jazz Bennett, Carlton MediaCarlton ended their preseason in a gutsy 18-point loss to Adelaide on Sunday, but there were plenty of promising signs that they can carry into their 2024 season. The Crows started the game off hot, claiming back-to-back midfield clearances which resulted in two early goals. The Blues tried to bounce back, with Keeley Sherar and Abbie McKay working hard to move the Sherrin forward, however, Adelaide’s defence was well-prepared behind the ball. While the start to the quarter was disappointing, Carlton managed to finish on a high with a quick transition from Dayna Finn, Gab Pound and McKay ending in a Sherar goal after the quarter-time siren. Defender Harriet Cordner was everywhere on the ground all afternoon, pushing high up the ground to assist her teammates on the wing and forward flanks, while Gen Lawson-Tavan put in strong aerial contested work in the defensive 50. Ruck Breann Moody was also a looming figure for the Blues, applying consistent pressure, which resulted in a massive smother in the middle and providing a strong marking target down the line. After a scoreless second quarter, Cartlon came out firing in the second half with a classy goal from third-year player Keeley Skepper setting the tone, as Finn again provided the clearance from the midfield.
Maddy Guerin took a big contested mark at high half-forward, quickly playing on to boot the ball forward. Moody then took to the grass to go on a one-on-one chase in an otherwise empty forward 50, resulting in a much-needed goal for the away side. Forward Mia Austin was quick to join in the scoring flurry, soccering the ball through in an exciting finish. Adelaide was able to bounce back in the final quarter, however, keeping the Carlton defenders under constant pressure. Draftee Meg Robertson showed promising signs at half-back, making second efforts on her players and crumbing from the back of the back. Defender Lulu Beatty also had exciting moments at half back, connecting well with Darcy Vescio on the wing. The connection between co-vice captains McKay and Mimi Hill was on full display, clearing out the midfield to penetrate the Blues’ forward line. The Blues will look to regroup and deliver a strong performance against the Hawks in Round 1 on Sunday 1 September.
Major stats-winners, lessons learned. - Sarah Black and Gemma Bastiani
What we learnt: Although the Blues didn't come away with the win, they did learn that they have the temerity to fight back when they are down. After conceding five first half goals, Carlton had a strong third quarter to narrow the margin, before making the final quarter an arm wrestle. Dayna Finn's move to the wing appears a solid choice, as she reliably supported the defence, while also sliding forward to hit the scoreboard. Meanwhile, as the most experienced player down back in the absence of Kerryn Peterson, Harriet Cordner (18 disposals, four rebound 50s) was simply relentless in the face of an onslaught of inside 50s. Yasmin Duursma (16 disposals, three marks) offered some dash out of defence, and Mia Austin fought well up forward when opportunities presented. Breann Moody split her time between the ruck and key forward, while twin sister Celine seemed to undergo some testing on the sidelines but ultimately didn't get onto the ground despite being named in the initial team. - Gemma BastianiMajor ball-winners: Mimi Hill (24), Abbie McKay (23), Dayna Finn (19), Lulu Beatty (18), Harriet Cordner (18), Darcy Vescio (18)

Thursday 9th August, 2024 (4.30 pm).
On the field, Carlton will show off 26 players across five time periods, where they’ll have the opportunity to put their game structures to the test, rotate through positions and put into place what they have trained over the pre-season. New Blues Celine Moody, Meg Robertson, Lila Keck, Yasmin Duursma and Jade Halfpenny, who have been added to the list since the 2023 season. It will be a chance for Maddy Guerin, Tahlia Read and Lulu Beatty to get some game-time under their belts, with the trio missing the previous season due to injuries. Gen Lawson-Tavan and Ciara Fitzgerald hold their spot on the list after being added as injury replacements in 2023, while young guns Mia Austin and Keeley Sherar will be looking to strut their stuff after impressive VFLW seasons. Captain Kerryn Peterson and Jess Dal Pos will not feature in tonight’s match simulation against Melbourne as part of their individual preparations heading into the start of the season, with Peterson to focus on increasing her training loads over the next few weeks as she prepares for the upcoming campaign. Marianna Anthony has withdrawn due to illness.
Match Review
Blues hold on against Demons
The Blues showed some solid signs in their first hitout of the 2024 season. - By Jazz Bennett, Carlton MediaAFLW once again lit up IKON Park, as the Blues played in a five-term match simulation against the Demons on Friday night. The Blues hit the ground running in the first term, with quick transitions from the midfield into the forward line, resulting in a quick opening goal from Mia Austin. Co-vice captain Mimi Hill was everywhere, intercepting marks and accumulating the clearances while Keeley Skepper kicked an impressive goal from 40 metres out, bouncing over the heads of two Melbourne defenders. The second term saw glimpses of what’s to come from Celine Moody, with a strong contested overhead mark taken in the forward 50. The highlight of the second term came with a clever goal on the run from injury replacement player Jade Halfpenny, with her teammates running from everywhere to get around her. Melbourne had multiple entrances into their forward 50 in the first two terms, however, rampant pressure from young defender Lulu Beatty along with the defender duo of Harriet Cordner and Gen Lawson-Tavan stopped the Demons from being able to capitalise, resulting in the away side being held goalless for the first two periods. The third and fourth terms told different stories however, with Melbourne coming out of the blocks strong and composed. Breann Moody was solid floating through the ruck and backline, and Keeley Sherar showed exciting moments getting back to help the defenders. Yasmin Duursma also showed promising signs in her first outing in the Navy Blue, halting a quick transition from the Demons with a strong intercept mark in the opposition's forward 50. The Blues were able to bounce back with quick transitions of their own, with fast movements down the corridor resulting in goals from Austin and Celine Moody. The shortened fifth term showed a lot of end-to-end action, with both teams struggling to convert. Tall defenders Cordner and Lawson-Tavan were huge for Carlton in the final stanza, who managed to hold on finishing the game one point ahead.
