Game Review
Carlton would defeat the Hawks for the second time of the year, this time by 37 points, in this game at Glenferrie.During the 3rd quarter boundary umpire D Hall reported Grieve for attempting to strike a spectator. “However, Grieve told the Tribunal that he merely had lost balance after flying for a mark and had crashed into the boundary fence and spectators.” (From page 203 of ‘Carlton, The 100 Greatest’ by Jim Main and Russell Holmesby) and the case was thrown out.
Carlton held a 20 point lead at three quarter time, but Hawthorn had the wind in the final term and looked capable of taking out the game. The Blues had looked like it had blown it's chances with the wind in the third term by poor kicking and added a shocking 2.10 - 1.0 . Perc Bentley then moved Jack Howell from the forward line into the ruck, and this move stymied any drive the Hawks expected from their ruck division. With the wind slackening, Howell provided the Blues with the drive they needed, and out scored Hawthorn by 3.3 - 0.1. The back line in this term was impenetrable and was led admirably by Ollie Grieve.
