With a distinct chance of climbing into the top four, fifth-placed Carlton hosted Footscray (sixth) in front of a bumper crowd at Princes Park on a cold, drizzly Saturday afternoon – and threw away victory with one inaccurate quarter.In game number 100 for popular 1947 Premiership ruckman Fred ‘Mulga’ Davies, the Blues were clearly on top early and led by 16 points at the first change. By half-time, Carlton had scored 4.8 to 2.6 in the wind and the rain, to maintain a 14-point advantage. Then, from the first bounce of the third term, the home side attacked in waves, streaming down the ground with dash and determination – only to spray their kicks at goal like a midget with a fire-hose. Seven scoring shots during the quarter produced 1.6, while the Bulldogs made the most of their chances to kick three majors straight and cut the difference to eight points.
The last quarter produced the best football of the match, as the rain stopped and the wind eased. Footscray’s stand-in full-forward Billy Wood was the star when his two late goals – the result of clever leading and accurate kicking – gave Footscray a 3-point advantage that they successfully defended through a hectic last few minutes.
Carlton slid to sixth ladder position after this defeat, but results in the other matches luckily fell the Blues’ way. Afterwards, the team was still hanging in there as a finals contender - six points out of the top four, but with the third-best percentage of all at 116.75.

VALE GEORGE MILLSON
This evening's edition of the Sporting Globe (p4) reported that long time Carlton committeeman George Millson died at the Carlton ground this day.George Millson was on the Carlton Committee from 1928 - 1950 and the Players Welfare Committee 1943.
According to a club list of life members Millsom was awarded one in 1928.
In tribute, the club instituted the George Millson Memorial Medal for best and fairest for the Carlton U19 team.
George was 70 years of age.

Future AFL Legend and Footscray first year player Ted Whitten turned 18 on Friday. The 'Dogs had 10 first year players in this match, average age of team just 21 years.According to the Sporting Globe July 26 Whitten is already one of the League's star players.
