Game Review

By circumstance, Carlton met Essendon again in this round, only this time the match was held at Princes Park. Having convincingly beaten the Same Old the previous week at their home ground, Blues coach Jack Worrall told his team that they could destroy Essendon’s confidence if they could do it again, and that’s how the game panned out.

Strengthened by the return from injury of their surprise packet full-forward Norm Yeo, Essendon attacked the contest fiercely throughout the first half, but couldn’t break through a resolute Carlton defence. Having repelled wave after wave of attacks, the Blues kicked three goals in the last few minutes before half time, and from then on took control. At full-back, Doug Gillespie held Yeo under a tight rein and restricted him to just one major, while Mick Grace dominated his position at centre half-forward and kicked five big goals to see Carlton home by a comfortable 18 points.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 143.0.
