Game Review
Following a shock loss to Fitzroy in Round 1, the axe was swung at the selection table with Eric Huxtable, Joe Kelly and Ansell Clarke amongst others dropped for the clash with South.The ploy failed in the short term, because the Blues went down to the Southerners. But it succeeded long term as the team went on to win 15 of the remaining 16 home and away matches.
Prior to the game, Sir William Brunton opened the new Robert Heatley stand which had cost $7000 to build. However the occasion was marred when two South Melbourne players were hit by stones thrown from the crowd in front of the new stand.
Within five minutes of the opening bounce, South had scored three goals and it took an excellent clearing kick from Johnson and a fine mark to Davey for Carlton to register its first goal. While the contest was very fierce, South were stronger across the centre and their forward line well on top. At quarter time, South had scored seven goals and led by 28 points. An even second quarter followed and the same margin separated the sides at the long break.
In the third quarter, South increased their lead, kicking five unanswered goals before Gill and Vallence scored late goals. R. Green injured his hip and was replaced during this quarter. Trailing by eight goals at the last change, Carlton fought hard in the last quarter to launch attacks but Vallence and Jack Green were the only forwards having any impact. Eight scoring shots by Carlton resulted in 2 goals 6 for the quarter and when the final siren blew, Carlton has lost by 38 points.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 10th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 73.5.
