Game Review
After their first round bye, Carlton unveiled six debutantes for their opening game of the 1942 season, in this 40-point loss to South Melbourne. With both Geelong and the VFA in wartime recess between 1942 and 1944, only one of these debutantes hadn’t played for either the Cats or in the Association. The sole exception was a young Jack "Chooka" Howell from Chelsea, who was to play his first senior game for the Blues against the club his father represented so well in the 1918 Grand Final.
'Chooka' wouldn't appear in the firsts again for two seasons, before going on to a glorious career in the ruck for the mighty Blues. Two excellent recruits in George Gniel and Jim Knight came from Geelong, while the other three new faces came from the VFA in "Bomber" Atkinson from Coburg, Wilf Atkinson from Sandringham (they were not related) and Arthur Sleith from Preston.
Three of these young men were also serving in the RAAF. Tragically, only Arthur Sleith would survive the war, with both Wilf Atkinson and Jim Knight losing their lives while on active service during 1943. Later in the season, after turning 18, "Chooka" Howell also joined the RAAF. George Gniel was serving in the AIF, while the older "Bomber" Atkinson was doing his war service in the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 8th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 59.6.
