Game Review
The ground was in good condition with a slight wind favouring the Sydney Road, or Royal Parade end. However, the game was described as "dull" as Melbourne was not a strong combination, as a result much of the play was a scrambling type of game. The Blues were strong in attack and their marking and speed was too much for their opponents.Carlton's good start to 1913 continued with this 26 point win against the Demons. The Blues stayed in second place after 3 rounds.
Rowdy Football Barrackers
Towards the close of the football match between Carlton and Melbourne on Prince's Oval on Saturday what was regarded as a piece of "dirty" work by a player aroused the indignation of the crowd, and serious trouble appeared imminent. Bristow, a Melbourne player, while engaged on the wing in front of the grand stand, struck Challis, of Carlton, a heavy blow in the stomach. Challis fell prostrate and winded, and the final bell rang a few seconds later. While the excitement was at it's highest the ground was rushed, notwithstanding strong police protection, and the Melbourne players were surrounded. Missiles were thrown as the men were entering the underground passage to their dressing-room, and fully 500 people waited until they emerged in ordinary dress. Another demonstration took place, but the players cleared off in cabs and without injury. Near a booth in the outer ground partisanship ran so high that a free fight occurred, and another section of 300 people seemed to have joined in the fray. Two troopers galloped to the scene and scattered the mob. (Chronicle (Adelaide) May 17 p18)At the end of this round Carlton were in 2nd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 123.2.
