Game Review
A big crowd at Victoria Park certainly got it's money's worth as both Carlton and Collingwood kicked the ton of points in this 24-point loss by the Blues. Collingwood legend Gordon 'Nuts' Coventry tore holes in Carlton's defence, and ended the match with seven goals, but Carlton captain Horrie Clover was even more impressive, kicking seven of his own from fewer opportunities. Collingwood won the game with a six-goals to three third quarter, to establish an advantage they held to the final bell.It took 27 seasons of VFL football to produce a match where both sides scored 100 points (Carlton vs Fitzroy, round 1, 1924) but just another four games until it happened again here.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 90.6.
War's Misfortune
" When McLatchie's knee was twisted in a collison early in the game, and with Brew injured, Carlton's chances of defeating the Magpies were discounted by 50 percent. It looked as though the dark blues would have to finish the game with 16 men, but after receiving attention in the dressing room McLatchie gamely came back in the second quarter.The injury was so painful that every effort to kick the ball made him wince, and though he kicked two goals, very few could have known how difficult it was for him to put his foot to the ball. He had half a dozen other chances to score, but had to practically 't'o throw them away," so that the injury proved a severe handicap to Carlton, who certainly would have finished closer to the Magpies if their talented rover had not met with the mishap.
It was more unfortunate for his side because both Tebilco and Carter, the rovers, could do little against Webb and Cock, both of whom roved admirably for the Woodsmen."
