An article in a Kalgoorlie Miner November 24 1950 said William's father John was shot and killed by a bushranger in 1857.
His mother then rode on horse back with William, from Broadmeadows Station in South Australia to Geelong and back, a distance of 500 miles, to have William christened!
The Kalgoorlie Miner has misprinted the surname as Olwen.

Broadmeadows was in the S.E. border region of South Australia, just east of Naracoorte.
The name of the property was later changed to Hynams.
