The 1950's: A Summary
Overall, the 1950's was a painful decade for the Carlton Football Club, with no Premierships to our name (not even a single finals win!). What made it worse, as distinct from our Premiership drought of the 1920's (more precisely between 1915 and 1938), was that Carlton were not even to compete in a Grand Final over the 1950's as Melbourne, Geelong and Collingwood dominated the competition, and in fact Carlton would not even win a final for the whole decade. The club only managed finals appearances in 1952, 1957 and 1959. In both 1952 and 1957 the club reached the Semi Finals, but after losing in the first week was knocked out of the finals race. In 1959, the club finished in second place on the ladder, earning a double chance. A loss ensued against eventual premiers Melbourne in our Semi Final, and another narrow loss to Essendon a week later ended the Blues season.
