Craig Black never played a game for Carlton, he was a pacy ruck-rover / centreman recruited from Rosebud via TAC Cup team Dandenong Stingrays in which he was captain in his final season. He was Carlton's 3rd pick in the 1997 National Draft, number 55 overall. He was an excellent kick, who could kick important goals. Black captained the Stingrays in the losing 1997 TAC Cup Grand Final that was dominated by future Swans great Adam Goodes. He represented the U/18 Victorian Metro side in 1997, as well as playing as a top up player in 1997 in which he wore the No.51 guernsey.
Black was on the Blues list for two years but was unable to break into the senior side despite being named as an emergency a couple of times. Black headed back to his original club Rosebud after his delisting. In 2002, Black would play for VFL club Frankston Dolphins.
Black would later move into a coaching role where he spent time as an assistant coach at the Dolphins under ex Swans and Nth Melbourne star Shannon Grant, he would also later coach Somerville. In 2012, Black was the midfield coach for the Dandenong Stingrays and Victorian Country teams. In 2018 Craig coached the Dandenong Stingrays to a premiership.
Black was a life-long Carlton supporter at the time of his drafting.
