Another day, another Harry in Navy Blue. Carlton has selected Harry Charleson with pick No.9 at the 2024 Telstra AFL Rookie Draft. The GWV Rebels co-captain brings a damaging combination of speed and endurance into the backline, having a standout year at both state and national levels where he showcased his rebounding ability. Playing all four matches for Vic Country, Charleson’s standout performance came in Vic Country’s opening match against South Australia, where he finished the day with 23 disposals at 91 per cent efficiency, producing five intercepts and four score involvements to be ranked in Country’s top five performers for the day. At state level, the joint Rebels’ best and fairest winner stood up across his 16 matches, helping take his team to its Coates Talent League grand final appearance in 27 years. Averaging 21.4 disposals for the season, Charleson’s best outing came in Round 9, where he had a game-high 30 disposals to go with his seven marks and seven rebound 50s against the Geelong Falcons. Earning himself an invite to the Telstra AFL Draft Combine, Charleson’s agility and endurance was on full display, completing the agility test in 8.23 seconds and completing the two-kilometre time trial in 6:21. Head of List Management Nick Austin said he was excited to see the young defender come to IKON Park. “We’re really excited to have another Harry come to the Blues,” Austin said. “We were really drawn to his intercept ability and the way he’s able to read the game from half-back. He’s really classy by foot and backs himself coming out of defensive 50, turning defence into attack which is so important in the modern game. “For him to be able to continue his development alongside the likes of Nic Newman and Adam Saad, we think Harry will build on the progression he showed right throughout the 2024 season. “We think he’s a really smart defender, and he could grow into a really exciting contributor to our backline in years to come. “We can’t wait to see Harry in the Navy Blue.”

Draft Profile:

“A prolific rebound defender who sets up the play with precise kicking, and his blend of speed and endurance running.” – Michael Alvaro
Harry Charleson is hoping to follow in the footsteps of elder brother Lachie (Port Adelaide, 2023 pick 52) to the big leagues. Playing at the opposite end of the ground to his livewire sibling, Harry is a rebound defender who racks up the ball and uses it well by foot. He even had spurts in the midfield for Greater Western Victoria (GWV) this season, en route to the region’s first Coates Talent League Grand Final in 27 years. The East Point junior made his senior debut for the club in 2023 amid what was a terrific bottom-age season with the Rebels. Charleson made 13 appearances in the CTL, averaging 15.7 disposals and 3.6 rebound 50s per game. His form saw him earn selection in the Vic Country Under 17 side which took on Queensland in August, helping snatch a win after the siren. Such feats set him up to hit new heights in his top-age campaign. Charleson continued to be a mainstay for the Rebels, lifting his output to an average 21.4 disposals across 16 games and tying with Ollie Hannaford for the club’s best and fairest. He had to fight his way into the Vic Country Under 18 squad though, trialling successfully and playing out a full national carnival for the Big V. There, he was named in the bests for the first two games, against South and Western Australia.

Running half-backs are usually dime-a-dozen when it comes to the draft space, so it is important to either have all the relevant tools or some points of difference. Charleson is the type that has plenty of relevant traits, with his speed-endurance running and prolific uncontested possession rate lending to effective rebound play. With good competitive traits and a strong running base, he also has scope to develop as a rotational midfielder and will be gunning to join brother Lachie at the top level. Perhaps he looms as a late pick in this vastly talented draft.

Harry Charleson was recruited from GWV Rebels / St Pat's College Ballarat / East Point FC / Learmonth FC
