Game Review

At long last - a win! The battered Blues broke their four-game losing sequence with this clinical carving-up of last-placed Fitzroy at Princes Park - a win celebrated in hindsight for the debut of future Premiership defender and crowd favourite Kevin Hall.

The game got off to a fast start and promised to be a good game. Fitzroy were quickly out of the blocks and had the Blues troubled with their pace. A confident Carlton then swung into gear and became the aggressor. The Blues with superior team work and strength, soon had them on top and held a two goal lead at quarter time. This was increased to 22 points at the main break, and Carlton added 6.5 to 2.1 in the third term to hold a match winning 50 point lead. The 'Roys out scored the Blues by 9 points in the last quarter.
"Carlton's reorganised attack functioned excellently, John Gill was mobile and creative at centre half-forward and Gordon Collis, at full forward, showed promise and did more useful work than his one goal indicated.
The move of Tom Carroll to a flank and Berkley Cox back to the centre added bite to both lines. Clear superiority in the ruck, in the air and a tough defence, headed by John James and John Benetti, were other factors behind the win." (Age July 29)
