Carlton would have to travel to Football Park to take on the in form, second on the ladder Port Adelaide. To be able to control this game throughout and emerge with a 34 point victory was an excellent result and frankly what was expected a week earlier to celebrate SOS's 300th game. It was a good team effort with all players working well for each other (something Carlton were not able to do consistently enough during 2001).

Scott Camporeale was the leading possession winner with 25 and kicked 2 goals. So dominant was he early that the only time his opponent Josh Francou was able to catch Campo he crudely hit him & copped a two week suspension. Anthony Koutoufides still had 24 and 4 goals when playing most of the game as a permanent forward. Jim Plunkett had 22, Brett Ratten and Craig Bradley each had 21 and kicked 2 and 1 goals respectively. Andrew McKay was excellent in defence, while Stephen Silvagni shut down Tredrea. Darren Hulme kept Nick Stevens quiet.

The win would put Carlton ahead of Port Adelaide on the ladder in 3rd position, with a healthy percentage of 127.
