Game Review
Geoff Southby gave a dashing display for Carlton at full back against North Melbourne, and was largely responsible for the Blues great victory by shutting the North forwards right out of the game. Southby was well supported by the strong marking Blues forward Rod Galt who contested well with strong pack marks, that was topped off with five goals for the game. - Inside Football Player of the Year.
Treat for Southby
Carlton's full back Geoff Southby played a magnificent game against North Melbourne at Arden Street on Saturday. Southby was one of the main factors behind the Blues crushing 61 point victory, which established them as premiership favourites. He completely eclipsed North Melbourne star Malcolm Blight in the first half and beat several other opponents after that. - Geoff Poulter Inside Football.
Carlton are really on fire. Their effort in humbling North by 61 points was absolutely amazing. This game was supposed to be a close one, or so everyone thought, but Jezza and his men had other ideas. They just steamrolled the Roos with their big-man strength, their marking and also their ability to place the ball to position. Saturday's game highlighted North's definite lack of big, mobile players. They desperately need Peter Keenan and Frank Gumbleton back in their side. Peter Jones and Rod Galt had a birthday against the smaller North players. Of course North aren't as bad as they seemed. Carlton have made an amazing recovery, however Jezza must be just a little worried about how well events are going for him. Everything he touches turns to gold. I have no doubt he will remember how the Midas touch became a curse and therefore Carlton should not get too complacent. They must remember they have reached the position they now hold through hard work, and it will require even more, to have any impact on the finals. - Gary Dempsey Inside Football.
