Game Review
Carlton suffered their first loss of the year, by losing to Collingwood by 6 goals. Carlton sat in 4th spot after 3 rounds, behind Collingwood, Melbourne and the Saints on percentage. The Blues settled starting 18 suffered a blow with Carney's suspension and the late loss of Anderson with a thigh injury. Jones replaced Anderson, Mann was brought into the team at centre half forward, and dependable backman Chitty was placed on the wing.A "stirred up" Collingwood smarting from last week's loss hit the ground running and with Fothergill (7.6 - five goals in the first quarter!) starring on the Woods' forward line, the usual reliable Carlton defence had no answer. The visitors could do no right, spoiling each other, fumbling, missing marks and targets with their short passing. The Blues rallied during the second quarter with Crisp playing well on the half forward line and the Blues edged to within 8 points.
However, after half time the Pies added 12.11 to 7.12. Diggins had made wholesale changes in desperation to change the situation, Baxter moved from centre half back to full forward, Hollingshead was taken out of the ruck, Crisp into the centre replacing Schmidt, Wrout on to the ball, it all made little difference as the home team coasted to victory in the final term. Rod McLean was the Blues' best man with a lion-hearted effort, who "battled the packs all day and refused to admit defeat."

At the end of the third term the time keepers rung the bell, but Umpire Hawkins failed to hear it at his end of the ground. Players in the centre heard it and frantically tried to signal to him. Collingwood meanwhile scored a behind. On being informed, and after the play had stopped, Hawkins quite correctly ran across to the press box and asked the time keepers to ring the bell again. In this match, and described as an "unusual feature," a total of 20 minutes of time-on had been added.McInnes
