Game Review
Don't let the round number surprise you, for this was actually our opening game of season 1979, due to a small amount of fixture manipulation by the VFL / AFL explained here.Despite an even start to the game, and thus the season, Carlton pulled away over the second and third quarters to grind down the Bombers out at Waverley.
More importantly, the Blues would welcome some emerging stars to our line-up, including the Dominator Wayne Johnston.
Maclure was rated best on ground in this match - awarded a rating of eight out ten in The Age's Footballer of the Year award.
Carlton opened the 1979 VFL season with the first victory when they outplayed Essendon by 21 points at VFL Park last Saturday. The first game of the season, as part of the round three fixture, was exciting throughout and attracted a crowd of 41,717. Essendon was capable of keeping close with their opponents in the opening term but was then run off their feet by a pacier Carlton. Newcomers Wayne Johnston and Alex Marcou made promising debuts for Carlton and teammate Mike Fitzpatrick showed he was back to form in marking and ruck duels. Carlton centre half-forward Mark Maclure was a clear winner from the outset and dominated the Blues attacks. - Football Record.
Carlton's victory over Essendon already earning them four premiership points, could expect their best season from former West Australian Mike Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick, who has had broken seasons with Carlton because of studies in England, showed last Saturday that he will be in top ruck form this season. The Blues also have handy acquistions in Wayne Johnston, Peter Francis and Alex Marcou who played their first games for the Blues against the Bombers. - Football Record
