Game Review

Collingwood was languishing at the bottom of the ladder after three rounds, and Carlton made the gloom at Victoria Park just that bit heavier in this game by handing the Magpies a five-goal defeat. Although the home team matched the ladder-leaders in general play for most of an entertaining match, Carlton’s forwards were on target around the goals, and their accuracy during the third and fourth quarters was decisive.

For Carlton, Harvey Kelly was the most effective forward on the ground. His four goals came from a series of strong marks and long straight shots at goal, while Martin Gotz and Les Beck stood tall in the Blues’ defence.

In other matches, University won their second game, beating St Kilda at the Junction Oval, and the improving Melbourne edged out South Melbourne by 2 points at the MCG to move up to fifth. The top four teams were still Carlton, Essendon, Fitzroy and South Melbourne.

Members

Although the season has just begun, Carlton has already signed up over 3,000 members.
"But the term member is somewhat of a misnomer. There is no form of election, but the member elect planks down five shillings for a piece of cardboard, which franks him into the reserve on the local ground, and into the popular portion of the opposing ground. For his dollar he thus obtains about a guinea's worth - a splendid investment. Of course, everyone realises this puesdo membership affects the gate, but the raison d'etre is that, almost without exception, the clubs are "stony" at the beginning of each season, and this inrush of members of the "almighty dollar" is thankfully accepted to restore a healthy shape to the depleted money-bags."
