Game Review

Carlton met their former nemesis Fitzroy in this round, confident of burying a home-ground hoodoo. Since the formation of the VFL in 1897, the Blues had played the Maroons 11 times at Princes Park, and emerged victorious just twice. But this time around, Carlton was a more complete team en route to a third successive Premiership, and Fitzroy was to be just another scalp.

The Blues made a strong side even more imposing with the inclusion of star centreman Rod McGregor and versatile follower ‘Mallee’ Johnson, at the expense of Vin Gardiner (injured) and Wally Koochew. The Maroons too, fielded most of their better players, and the first half of the match was tight and even.

Carlton broke the game open in the third term, thanks to forwards Frank Caine and George Topping. Caine’s aerial ability, and Topping’s clever ground play were instrumental as the home side got right on top in the latter part of the match, and won easing down by four goals.

Another percentage boost for the Blues consolidated their number one ladder position, with Essendon, Fitzroy, and South Melbourne still making up the top four.
