Game Review
It rained constantly throughout this match at Princes Park, and for most of the day the game was more of a rugby maul. Carlton were the better team, and eventually won by nine points in a muddy slog. Most of those nine minor scores were rushed through by the Hawthorn defenders.Still, the Blues climbed to fifth after another win, two points outside the four.
"The value of the burly type of player in the conditions was clearly demonstrated by the dominance of Sergio Silvagni and John Benetti. Playing close to ground this pair kept their balance amazingly, and crashed through Hawthorn's defence effortlessly.
Glenthompson recruit Dave McCulloch also excelled, and this half forward trio won the game. The Carlton half-backs also were a telling force. They blanketed their opponents and countered a weak centre line by driving the ball well down to the winning half- forwards." (Age May 16)
