South Melbourne's enforcer Ken Boyd was reported for striking Carlton's John Nicholls and John Heathcote in this fiery encounter at the Lake Oval. The Blues won by 16 points, while Boyd was found guilty on both charges and suspended for eight weeks. His return match - coincidently, against Nicholls and Carlton - would be even more controversial.
