Game Review
Carlton again are defeated playing Essendon on Anzac Day this time at Waverley on a Friday. This was the day when VFL Park came of age. 75,000 fans lining up to get in to the 'ground of the future'. Based in the heart of suburbia, it would go on to create more records with over 90,000 for a Hawthorn Colingwood game in 1981. But the VFL over extended itself (and misread public opinion) when it insisted on moving the Grand Final from the MCG to VFL Park by 1984. It never eventuated and by the time the ground did hold a Grand Final, it was only because the MCG was being upgraded. Of course, a preference for 'Inner city living' proved the final nail in the coffin for this ground.
It all looked so different on this beautifully sunny Autumn Day in 1975.
Speaking of false dawns, it also proved to be the case for Essendon who promptly lost to lowly Fitzroy the week after and slowly drifted out of finals contention.
Essendon followed their magnificent victory over Carlton last year with a magnificent display of power football in front of the largest crowd ever to attend a game at VFL Park (77,700) when they inflicted Carlton's first defeat for the season. It was the first time they have won two in a row over the Blues since 1968. They held Carlton to exactly the same score Hawthorn did Richmond the previous week at League headquarters. Carlton were forced to finish the game with 17 players following the injury to Ray Byrne, Trevor Keogh and Rod Ashman. - Football Record.
